Sea of Cortez - Wellness Expedition Cruise

January 26, 2019 - February 02, 2019

The youngest sea in the world, the Sea of Cortés came into being over 5 million years ago when tectonic plates shifted, separating what is today Baja California from mainland Mexico.

Over 700 miles long, this narrow sea is a glittering turquoise jewel, dotted with many islands predominantly located along its western shoreline and outlined by the long arm of the Baja peninsula. A dramatic desert of soft, muted greens, golds, and reds, the land rises quickly from the sea along the Sierra de la Giganta — the peninsula’s mountainous spine.

On land, and on — or in! — the water, it’s easy to get lulled into the quiet, gentle rhythm of this sun-kissed state. But below the surface of the sea and in all the nooks and crannies of rocky red cliffs and high reaching cardon cactus, the land is teeming with life.

Stocked with supplies and a bountiful sense of adventure, follow Steinbeck’s path into the protected waters of Cousteau’s “world’s aquarium.” Active exploration and a menagerie of wildlife await you! Immerse yourself in a week focused on fitness & yoga.

DAY 1

San José del Cabo / La Paz – Embarkation
Bienvenidos! You’re met at the Los Cabos International Airport in San Jose del Cabo and transferred to our hospitality area. DAY 2

Isla San Francisco
Rise early and greet the day with guided sun salutations. Or, catch a few more winks if your yoga session is slated for later in the day. Then step into a playground of red bluffs and desert beach. Don flippers for a snorkel among colorful sea life. The buoys set the course if you want to get in a full-body swim workout. Put on your walking shoes for a cardio-power hike, grab a paddle, or relax on the beach. The rugged beauty of the island makes it an ideal spot for escapades. Later, go deep on training, diet, and mindfulness. Your wellness hosts lead discussions and presentations over the next days that guide you toward living your healthiest life.

DAY 3

Bahía Agua Verde
Clear waters bordered by sparse mountains hemmed in green. The protected bay is perfect for speed—like a power kayak to build your core, shoulders, and arms. Or, find inner peace on a walking meditation or explore the coast by small skiff. Take to the canyons on a mule ride and experience the “real Baja” with a local ranchero and his family. Scenic vistas, excellent birding, and unmatched camaraderie—all distractions from the work your body is doing.

DAY 4

Captain’s Choice
While it’s unlikely you’ll find any black pearls, today sail among islands once explored by early conquistadors. Your expedition team is ready with adventurous options—kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding, or beachcombing. Discover nature’s diversity and the geologic forces that formed these islands. Your wellness team brings fitness full-circle with a healthy lifestyle discussion. Wind down with a meditation or yoga practice, and a bit of stargazing in the night sky.

DAY 5

Marine Life Search
Mother Nature is your guide today. Whale sharks—the largest living species of fish—frequent Bahia de La Paz (Dec–mid-Jan). Keep watch for the watery “footprints” of these gentle giants, and conditions permitting, gear up for an unforgettable snorkel alongside this colossal creature or observe from above in the skiff. Or, if the gray whales have arrived in Bahia Magdalena (mid-Jan or later), dock in Puerto Escondido, then drive across the peninsula to ride in a panga and observe these marine mammals and their babies in the lagoon. They travel each year to calve on Baja’s west coast—migrating more than 12,000 miles.

DAY 6

Los Islotes / Isla Partida
This steep craggy seamount leaps straight from the sea as a haulout for sea lions. Observe the colony from the boat and skiff, or slip into a wetsuit for an early morning advanced snorkel with curious, agile sea lion pups. Afterwards, heave anchor and set sail for Isla Partida. What’s in store? Get ready to feel the burn and work up a sweat on a desert hike among cardon cactus and palo verde trees. Or keep cool, and boost your balance practicing yoga poses on a paddle board.

DAY 7

Isla Espíritu Santo
Tuck into a secluded cove surrounded by long fingers of red rock and a golden beach. Spend your last full day enjoying the warm sand under your feet. This beach was made for sun soaked yoga and a post-practice dip in the water. Reflect on your week of body and spirit rejuvenation on a shoreline walk. Investigate nooks and crannies in the rocks by kayak or go further afield on a guided hike. Celebrate your week at tonight’s special Farewell Dinner with an entertaining slideshow by your expedition team.
